Responsibilities

This position is responsible for providing technical and managerial support to the Chemical Safety Officer (CSO) and providing assistance managing the chemical safety program, as it relates to hazard communication and laboratory standards. Assists in responding to emergency situations involving hazardous materials, while also assuring to foster compliance with federal, state University, and other local policies and regulations.

  • Work with the CSO in the collection, transport, and management of hazardous materials for the Campus and FSU Hazardous Waste Storage Facilities. This includes the ability to perform hazardous waste collection activities and distribute appropriate accumulation containers for the main campus and satellite facilities. Possesses technical knowledge and skills necessary to respond to hazardous material spills and incidents on campus properties. Will perform activities such as documenting, tracking, training, labeling, storing, and purging of chemicals in support of established corrective action implementation.
  • Provide support in maintaining the comprehensive campus chemical safety program related to general lab safety, chemical safety, process safety, high hazards, physical hazards, etc. Schedules and conducts laboratory safety evaluations to identify and evaluate a wide variety of potential hazards in the workplace; manages the laboratory Coat Program and SDS Database; and assists with implementation of the chemical safety program according to EH&S departmental procedures.
  • Participates in formal and on-the-job training, on-site inspections, and assessments to ensure the university follows regulatory chemical compliance. Provides assistance with training to deal with unplanned occurrences such as hazardous spills or safety system failures. Participate in sampling events and be able to understand sampling results based on inspection findings.
  • Provide assistance with the management of regulated materials and accountability programs. Ensures proper storage and disposal of these hazardous materials. Able to lift items that weigh up to 50 pounds and be able to move heavier materials using handling equipment or assistance. Review and be familiar with standard operating procedures (SOPs) for research laboratories to safely develop and carry out research to help minimize risk to our research personnel and students.
Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field; or a high school diploma/equivalent and four years of experience related to the duties of this position.
(Note: or a combination of post-high school education and experience equal to four years in the same.)
A valid State of Florida or Georgia driver's license or the ability to obtain prior to hire.

  • Ability to maintain accurate records and retrieve files from active or archive sources.
  • Skill in performing safety inspections ensuring compliance with OSHA and NFPA safety standards.
  • Skill in preparing clear and concise reports, policies, procedures, correspondences, and other written materials.
  • Knowledge of emergency communications and hazard response practices, procedures, and protocols.
