About the Opportunity

This is an open position with Ohio Edison, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp [OE].

This is a mobile (remote) position. The selected candidate must be located within the Ohio Edison footprint in the State of Ohio.

Underground Network Support Engineer position requires an individual to be self-directed with an interest and/or ability to create and manage engineering designs for underground distribution, network and sub transmission facilities, manage contract work and evaluate and specify non-standard underground equipment for the Underground Engineering Group within Ohio Edison. This position must provide technical support to OE underground construction crews, contract construction personnel, contract right of way services and project management verifying that no safety standards are compromised, monitoring expenditures to ensure projects stay within budget allocation and meet required in-service dates.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate and direct a solid commitment to all aspects of safety - especially regarding safely working in enclosed or confined spaces.
  • Enter enclosed and confined spaces to determine and assess existing conditions and recommend improvements and solutions for projects.
  • Participate in the development of projects and their scope definition, estimates, designs, and execution.
  • Create work scope, engineering designs, documents for underground distribution and sub transmission systems. Design in accordance with FE Construction Standards, FE Engineering Practices, FE Material Specifications, National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and National Electric Code (NEC).
  • Complete complex electrical designs for facilities installed in concrete manholes, concrete transformer vaults, concrete encased duct banks to service Central Business Districts (CBD). Complete designs utilizing traditional underground distribution circuits and underground network primary and secondary circuitry.
  • Interpret, maintain existing and develop new underground vault and manhole drawings using appropriate software.
  • Monitor existing conditions of the underground network and ducted system and propose budget projects while collaborating with planning and reliability engineering.
  • Collaborate with underground construction crews and leadership to obtain existing information about system conditions and proposed solutions. Act to move all aspects of projects forward to completion.
  • Ability to assess and specify non-standard equipment necessary for the safe, efficient operation of the underground system.
  • Interest and ability to travel to evaluate and assess applicability and conformance to specifications of non-standard equipment necessary for the safe, efficient operation of the underground system.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering (BSEE, BSCE, BSME) from an ABET accredited institution is required. Acceptable alternatives are: (1) a Professional Engineer's (PE) License (2) a Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering or technical field of study (non-ABET) plus an advanced degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.
  • Understanding of electrical engineering and utility power system concepts with ability to learn new complex electrical topics quickly.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with an emphasis on understandable and clear technical writing and presentation skills.
  • Possess strong knowledge, maturity, and decision-making skills regarding electrical problems and analyzing complex information.
  • Detail-oriented, accurate, and able to understand and interpret complex technical information.
  • Solid computer skills with competency in Microsoft Office products (particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), along with a working knowledge of CAD and GIS software systems.
  • Able to work both independently and in team environments.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to customer satisfaction.
  • Self-motivated and a self-starter, customer-focused, results-oriented and a team player.
  • Demonstrate a questioning attitude and desire to continue to learn, produce results, and develop relationships with other departments and customers.
  • Deliver quality, accurate work within established deadlines.
  • Possess and maintain a valid state-issued driver's license.
  • Willing and able to travel throughout the service territory periodically, and willing to work extra and/or irregular hours during unusual circumstances (e.g. storm restoration efforts).
