General Statement of Job:
Reporting to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement and External Affairs (VPIAEX), the Executive Director of Fundraising and External Affairs is the principal leader responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, securing, and stewarding individual prospects and donors for bequests and complex planned gifts to South Texas College. In addition, the Executive Director-Fundraising and External Affairs will maintain relationships with chambers, service organizations, community groups, corporations, city, county, and state officials to support the strategic relationship-building goals of South Texas College.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Creates, cultivates, and manages the South Texas College Fundraising and External Affairs portfolios/relationships of donors and prospective philanthropic organizations.
  2. Develops assigned donors and prospects through various cultivation calls, letters, and handwritten notes, with an emphasis on successful face-to-face meetings.
  3. Develops and implements a detailed strategic plan designed to meet fundraising goals while providing vision, leadership, and administrative oversight of South Texas College Fundraising and External Affairs.
  4. Interacts with a wide variety of benefactors, community members, South Texas College alumni, faculty, staff, students, administrators, South Texas Foundation Board members, and South Texas College Board members to develop fundraising resources.
  5. Responsible for developing and implementing strategies, campaigns, and other fundraising program plans and presentations for identifying, qualifying, cultivating, and soliciting current and prospective donors from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  6. Provides leadership on donor prospect development, strategic partnerships, community relations, special initiatives, gift solicitation and meets with state/national philanthropic developers.
  7. Assists the VPIAEA and College President in establishing strong relationships with donors, the not-for-profit community, directing public awareness, and marketing efforts toward promoting the good works of the College.
  8. Oversees the progress and completion of departments’ goals and strategies, including the overarching goals. Oversees ongoing reporting to external accountant (monthly/annually).
  9. Responds to complex inquiries and complaints received from internal and external sources. Responds to and monitors grant inquiries.
  10. Researches, documents, and analyzes specific issues regarding the College’s Fundraising and External Affairs.
  11. Establish and administer policies and procedures that maintain the highest level of stewardship in overseeing the investments and use of gifts. Maintains knowledge of the College’s policies, procedures, applicable federal, state, local laws and regulations.
  12. Communicates with legal advisor(s), stays informed about changes in regulatory issues affecting foundations and/or nonprofits, transmitting to the Foundation’s Board of Directors as necessary.
  13. Facilitate the recruitment and orientation of new Foundation Board Directors, using coaching and mentoring skills to develop fundraising and donor relationship skill sets among board members.
  14. Reviews proposal forms, submits proposals, and prepares presentations to be sent to Foundation Board of Directors; noting potential issues.
  15. Plans Foundation Board of Directors meetings with the Foundation Chair, and prepares all necessary support materials. Records, constructs, and maintains official records of minutes and governing documents.
  16. Maintain relationships with chambers, service organizations, city, county and state officials. Represents the South Texas College foundation to other foundations, philanthropic support organizations, and grantees.
  17. Networks within the community and participates in partnership/collaborative opportunities with other Grantmakers and nonprofit organizations, as appropriate.
  18. Travels throughout the college district and requires some out of state travel, as needed. Represent the college as a member of organizations as appropriate and attend off-campus events, which may involve evenings and/or weekends.
  19. Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience:
  1. Bachelor degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  2. At least five (5) years of combined experience in increasingly responsible leadership and fundraising (including significant experience in donor solicitation, and familiarity with fund raising practices), financial sales, estate and financial planning, or other related areas required.
  3. Experience collaborating with high-level volunteers, donors, and program staff is required.
  4. Experience, familiarity, and/or ability to work in a complex non-profit organization consisting of multiple departments, programs, and fundraising priorities is required.
  5. Familiarity with fundraising issues and professional workplace ethics is required.
  6. A successful track record of fundraising with annual and/or planned gift donors is preferred.
  7. Professional working proficiency in writing, reading, and/or speaking Spanish is preferred but not required.
  8. Experience in higher education and community college setting is preferred.

  2. In addition, subject to a federal background check.
  3. Must have or qualify for a valid Texas driver’s license and proof of liability insurance.
