Job Description Summary / TWC Summary:

The Department of Biology in Texas Southern University is seeking to fill several part-time Instructor positions, at the level of adjunct Instructor. This appointment is without tenure and is not tenure track. This appointment is for one semester only and may be renewed as needed. The successful persons will be responsible to teach up to two Biology classes in the hired semester and assume a reasonable workload of related activities that constitute a 50% full-time instructional load; Schedule and maintain office hours for minimum of (2) hours per class per week in the hired semester, and perform scholarly activities, quality instruction and public service commensurate with the mission of Texas Southern University.

Essential Duties Summary:

  • Teaching Biology courses.
Performs other job-related duties such as but not limited to:
  • Maintain and submit an accurate student attendance.
  • Report Non-attending students by the 12th day of the semester.
  • Submits the student progress reports by the dates advertised during the semester.
  • Submit the mid-term grades as well as the final grades by the dates advertised during the semester.
  • Any other course related task as assigned.

Education:

Master's degree in Biology, Biological Sciences, Anatomy/Physiology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Cell Biology, Integrative Biology, Molecular Biology, Life Sciences, or basic science related field is required from an accredited school at the time of appointment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Possess a deep understanding of the subject they will be teaching. Must be able to explain complex concepts in a clear and concise manner and provide real-world examples to help students understand the material.
  • Be able to develop and implement effective lesson plans, prepare, and deliver lectures, and facilitate classroom discussions. Must also be able to assess student learning and provide constructive feedback.
  • Establish positive relationships with students, colleagues, and staff. Must be approachable, supportive, and respectful of diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Be familiar with technology and comfortable using it in the classroom. Must be able to use learning management systems, online communication tools, and other technology to support student learning.
  • Manage their time effectively to meet the demands of teaching, grading, and other administrative tasks. Must be able to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism. Must adhere to college policies and procedures, maintain confidentiality of student information, and be committed to providing a positive learning environment for all students.
  • Various software packages and applications.

  • Multitasking and time management.
  • Both verbal and written communication.
Ability to:
  • Work with a diverse student population.
Work Experience:

  • Preference is given to candidates who have either working experience or the teaching experience in Biology. Prior experience teaching in a college or university setting preferred.
  • Evidence of teaching experience related to biological science preferred.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems such as Blackboard, Canvas, Exam Soft or similar platforms preferred.

Working/Environmental Conditions:

  • Prolonged standing and/or walking.
  • Handling light weight objects.
  • Using or carrying classroom equipment.
