Position Summary:

The Dyson Wellness Center Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant will provide primary health care to students, employees, and family members of employees with an emphasis on clinical care, wellness, health education and health promotion. This person will assist in the follow-up of individuals with illness, provide clinical and professional supervision to the nursing staff, and review the CSOP annually making changes that reflect current evidence-based medical guidelines.

Description of Key Responsibilities:

1. Deliver high-quality health care to students, employees, and family members ages three to twenty-six within the State of Illinois APN guidelines and the scope of practice of the Dyson Wellness Center. Assess health status, order and interpret laboratory tests, diagnose and manage acute minor illnesses/ injuries and stable chronic illnesses, and provide patient education regarding diagnosis and treatment. Follow up with clients as appropriate. Provide referrals as warranted.

2. Provide clinical and professional supervision to the nursing staff. Maintain an excellent, collaborative relationship with the nurses and other members of the health care team including counselors, physician(s), campus advocate and administrative assistants. When appropriate, consult on client care with collaborating physician.

3. Maintain precise, confidential and timely electronic medical records. Regularly update medical forms as needed. Create, review and update medical protocols and CSOP annually making changes that reflect current evidence-based medical guidelines. Ensure that the collaborating physician signs off on CSOP each year.

4. Oversee the patient flow in the Dyson Wellness Center. Make recommendations about medical staff hours and assignments (to the Director of the Center). Work with the administrative assistants on medical scheduling as appropriate.

5. Assist in the hiring, training, and evaluation of medical staff.

6. Maintain relationship with Edward Hospital, Urgent Care and/or other medical providers to facilitate referrals and discounted rates for students.

7. Collaborate with other campus employees (Human Resources, Campus Safety, Residence Life, Athletic Training Staff, Title IX, Dean of Students, Student Disability Services and Dyson Wellness Center Staff) in emergency and educational efforts. Serve as a resource and provide health- related information to the campus community.

8. Represent the Dyson Wellness Center at various campus events, presenting information about services and/or health-related topics such as: new student orientations for students and parents, introduction to services for athletic teams, classes and student cohorts.

9. Remain current on health issues, particularly as they relate to the college student population, and be involved in local and national professional associations.

10. Independently manage client appointments from intake to discharge while maintaining a warm and welcoming environment.

11. Administrative duties such as ordering supplies when needed, pulling statistics, attending meetings, managing email, updating documents, work on committees and planning health education programs.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Customer service is critical to the success of any organization that deals with customers. Strong customer service skills can build retention and visibility as NCC strives to distinguish itself from its competitors. An individual in this position must possess the proficiency, wherewithal and knowledge of principles and processes for providing high-quality customer and personal services to both internal and external customers of the College.

1. Ability to effectively apply a broad range of clinical skills, including assessment of individuals.

2. Knowledge of the operation of a college medical facility.

3. Ability to consistently demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with people both internal and external to the College. In particular, the ability to relate in an empathetic and compassionate manner to people from a broad range of backgrounds, in both group situations and individually, many times in emotionally charged situations.

4. Ability to communicate in the English language, both orally and in writing, in a manner consistent with the professional standards, including the ability to deliver effective oral presentations, develop creative psychosocial and wellness related materials, prepare reports that are accurate, thorough, concise and professionally formatted.

5. Ability to use business-oriented computer systems, especially Electronic Medical Records using Titanium Software, word-processing and database management.

6. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students and visitors to the College.

7. Promote a flexible, collaborative and inclusive work and living environment and engage in

Distinguishing Characteristics:

The individual in this position has a considerable impact on the health and safety of members of the campus community. Therefore, this position requires a person who is a technically competent medical practitioner who is able to perform professionally in situations that may be highly emotional and stressful. This person must possess highly developed clinical, administrative and interpersonal skills, have experience working independently while also consulting as appropriate, and must adhere to the highest standards regarding confidentiality. This person must have outstanding communication skills, written and verbal, including ability to present clearly to audiences and write and edit protocols, email communication, and documentation.

The person in this position must be able to handle emergency and non-emergency medical issues. In addition to normally assigned hours of work, the person in this position may occasionally be required to respond to medical emergencies at other hours, days or locations and is expected to be on-campus to provide services at commencement annually.

Education/Training:

Graduate of an accredited Family Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program. National NP or Physician Assistant certification.

Experience:

A minimum of five years of experience is preferred with professional supervisory experience in a clinical setting strongly preferred. Experience in a college wellness center or walk-in clinic is preferred.

Licenses or Certifications:

A valid driver's license and acceptable driving record is preferred.

National Provider Identifier (NPI)
