About the Department

The University of Chicago's Department of Athletics and Recreation endeavors to serve the broad range of fitness, physical recreation, and athletic needs of the University of Chicago community. Numerous open recreation opportunities are provided in the two indoor facilities: the world-class Gerald Ratner Athletics Center, which features the 50-meter Myers-McLoraine Swimming Pool; and the historic Henry Crown Field House, as well as the outdoor fields, courts, and running track. On an average day, approximately 2,100 students, faculty and staff use the athletic and recreational facilities on campus. The Department sponsors 20 NCAA Division III intercollegiate teams and 570 student-athletes in various sports. In addition, the Department sponsors more than 39 club sports and a diverse intramural sports program in which approximately 8,500 students participate each year.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the head coach, assists with planning, coaching, recruiting, administering, and promoting an athletics program within NCAA and University of Chicago standards. Recommends, plans, and implements new instructional, training, and conditioning programs. Teaches relevant skills to student-athletes during team practices, games, and individual/small group training sessions.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and organizes the details of the team including skill teaching and development, practice organization, coaching, and player selection.
  • Evaluate individual performance and provides leadership and instruction in areas of deficiency as required.
  • Implements team discipline, decision-making, and independent judgment.
  • Directs the work of student workers and volunteer assistant coaches.
  • Comply with institutional, Midwest Conference, University Athletic Association, and NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Serves on professional departmental committees.
  • Ensures student-athletes and athletic representatives are informed of and comply with NCAA and University rules and regulations.
  • Represent the University of Chicago in professional, alumni, and civic functions.
  • Performs recruitment of student-athletes.
  • Develops and implements new instructional, training, and conditioning programs. Teaches relevant skills to student-athletes during team practices, games, and individual/small group training sessions.
  • Counsels and advises student-athletes on their academic, personal, and physical condition, consulting with the head coach and appropriate University staff as necessary. Participates in the development and implementation of an overall recruiting plan.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Master's degree.

Experience:
  • Significant and relevant playing or teaching/coaching experience in football at the professional, collegiate, or high school level.

Certifications:
  • Valid Driver's License.

Preferred Competencies
  • Familiarity with NCAA rules and Division III philosophy.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks and assignments concurrently.
  • Proficient in computer skills; Microsoft Office and other software.

Working Conditions
  • This role will perform many tasks outdoors.
  • Travel to various on and off-campus locations
  • Carry or lift loads and push/pull objects of up to 25 lbs.
