Purpose of Position

We seek a broadly trained Quantitative Conservation Biologist to strengthen the Fisheries and Wildlife Program and our focus on ecology of the Northern Great Plains. We encourage applications from candidates with a strong background in applied statistics and expertise and experience in analysis of field-collected data to inform management and decision-making. The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding promise for establishing a sustainable research program that will attract external funds and be aligned with the UND LEADS Strategic Plan.

The Biology Department serves approximately 500 undergraduate and >25 graduate students. In addition to teaching, faculty members conduct research addressing fundamental and applied questions in the biological sciences. The department offers graduate degrees through the Ph.D. and active training of graduate students is expected. The Fisheries and Wildlife program boasts an active student population whose graduates often go on to positions with state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and other conservation organizations.

Established in 1883, the University of North Dakota is the oldest research university in North Dakota. It is the state's flagship university and is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as having a high research activity. Founded with a strong liberal arts foundation, UND has grown into a prominent scientific research university and was recently ranked among the top 100 public and top 25 most innovative universities in the country by U.S. News and World Report and is widely regarded as among the top universities in the American Northern Plains region. UND offers degrees in more than 225 fields of study with over 14,000 students. It is the home of the state's only School of Law. The School of Medicine has major initiatives in rural and public health, and Aerospace is home to one of the first and largest unmanned aerial vehicle programs in the world.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Establish a productive, extramurally funded research program that works with relevant agencies, not-for-profit organizations or industry.
  • Contribute to the Biology and Fisheries & Wildlife Programs through teaching, advising, and providing undergraduate and graduate research experiences.
  • Contribute to implementing the new UND LEADS strategic plan.
  • Pre-tenure teaching duties will be equivalent to two courses per year for at least three years.

    strengths in the Ecology of the Northern Great Plains
Minimum Requirements
  • Ph.D. in Applied Statistics, Conservation Biology, Fisheries Biology, Wildlife Biology, Ecology,
    or related discipline
  • Successful completion of criminal history background check

Preferred Qualifications
  • Relevant postdoctoral experience
  • Research experience and expertise in development and application of statistical methods
    for field-collected data for conservation biology, ecology, or fisheries or wildlife studies
  • Experience obtaining extramural research funding
  • Experience mentoring students in research
  • Experience teaching undergraduate or graduate courses related to statistics or
    quantitative biology.
  • Experience working with a variety of stakeholders (e.g., state and federal agencies, non-
    governmental, landowners, industry).
