Essential Job Duties
  • Auditing Assignment - Will perform internal quality reviews (IQRs) for new coders and will provide daily updates. The Auditor will directly report to and assist the Project Manager by collaborating and assisting on oversight of managing workflow processes, identifying weaknesses and strengths of coding staff or other areas of concern, may participate in recruiting process, and other aspects of competency to ensure a successful program. The Auditor will be responsible for the quality assurance and performance of the contract coders and will include education, training, and system coding encounters process. Recommendations for new and established coders will include auditing spreadsheets and written reports of findings.
  • Encounter types: Focuses on Professional and institutional components for outpatient primary care, outpatient specialty clinics, day surgeries, emergency room, observation services, and/or Inpatient facility coding - Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group (MS-DRG)
  • Education and Feedback - Educate and provide feedback to coders through written, verbal, one-on-one training, or group sessions, ensuring coding compliance and accuracy. Be prepared to cite official resources for all discrepancies identified and act as a valuable resource for the coding team on appropriate coding and documentation practices
  • Collaboration and Support - Collaborate with fellow auditors, trainers, and management. Support internal Quality Control Plan compliance by performing due diligence on researching and/interpreting guidance
  • System Utilization - Utilize MHS computer systems to remotely access patient records and M365 environments for internal communication
  • Productivity and Standards -Achieve and maintain productivity and accuracy standards for the position in alignment with the coding team's mission.

  • Associate's degree or higher in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a biological science OR
  • University certificate in medical coding OR
  • Completion of a medical training program beyond apprentice level (e.g., medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training) offered by the Armed Forces or U.S. Maritime Service under professional medical supervision

Certifications -
  • ONE or more of the following certifications through AAPC or AHIMA

Professional Coding Certifications
  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC): Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA): Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist - Physician (CCS-P)

Evaluation & Management (E&M) Coding Certifications
  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC): Certified Evaluation and Management Coder (CEMC)
  • National Alliance of Medical Auditing Specialists (NAMAS): Certified Evaluation and Management Auditor (CEMA)

Institutional Coding Certifications
  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC): Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC)
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA): Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)

Required Experience
  • 3+ years of auditing
  • Experience reviewing OP, OP Specialty, Emergency Room, Observation, Rounds, Same Day Surgery, and/or Inpatient accounts.
  • Extensive knowledge of coding and auditing, ability to cite official Coding Guidelines and National Coding Resources, medical dictionaries, and other coding manuals
  • When requested, be able to code and maintain, 97% coding accuracy rate in each of the following areas:
    • ICD-10-CM
    • E&M (modifier utilization will impact accuracy rate)
    • CPT (modifier and unit of service utilization will impact accuracy rate)
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and usage, including general medical, surgical, pharmaceutical, hospital terms and abbreviations, and abstracting techniques
  • 2+ years of experience in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Adobe pdf, and proficient with computer hardware and software and willingness to expand experience
  • Annual coding credentials must be maintained by the individual

Preferred Experience
  • DoD or Veterans Administration auditing experience
  • MHS Genesis experience
