Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE), the largest auxiliary organization at Stanford University, supports the academic mission of the University by providing high-quality services to students and other members of the university community. The department has an annual operating budget of over $350M, operates 24/7/365, and oversees a $3B asset portfolio comprising a 7 million sq. ft. physical plant across the campus. In the autumn quarter of the 2021-22 academic year, R&DE will return to providing housing for over 13,000 students and dependents, serving meals at 17 dining halls, 12 retail locations, and operating athletic concessions and conference operations. Additionally, R&DE comprises 900 FTE staff in the following divisions: Student Housing Operations, Stanford Dining, Stanford Hospitality & Auxiliaries, Stanford Conferences, Maintenance Operations and Capital Projects, and a team of R&DE strategic business partners: Finance & Administration, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Strategic Communications.

This role is designated as essential and requires incumbents to report to work onsite. Telecommuting is not available for this role.

Carpentry Apprentice:

This Carpentry Apprentice position is offered under the terms of the Stanford University and SEIU Apprenticeship Program. The purpose of this program is to train an Apprentice to be a well-rounded Maintenance Carpenter to support the maintenance needs of Residential and Dining Enterprises facilities. Upon acceptance into the program, the Apprentice will be assigned to the Maintenance Operations team; successfully completing the Apprenticeship Program will develop skills in maintenance carpentry.

The program consists of full-time (40 hours per week) of on-the-job training and two evenings (3 hours each evening) of classroom education. Classroom training will take place at San Jose City College. The Apprentice will work under the direction of a supervisor, work with a journeyperson, and be assigned a mentor. Apprentices will be exposed to various trade duties covering the curriculum coursework. Excellent attendance, engagement, and performance at both On-the-Job tasks and the classroom portion of the program is a strict requirement. Through classroom work and on-the-job training, apprentices will be trained in the basic skills and tools of the trade.


Successful completion of this four-year program does not guarantee a position at Stanford but will prepare the candidate for application for a Maintenance Carpentry position.

Job Responsibilities:

·Working under general supervision, employees in this classification perform skilled carpentry work at the journey level in the construction, maintenance, and repair of structures, equipment, and fixtures.

·Work is assigned by the supervisor or lead and carried out by the carpenter independently, selecting methods most suitable for the job.

·Work is spot-checked for quality during progress and upon completion.

Characteristics Duties:

·Working from blueprints, sketches, and drawings, either provided or produced, and oral or written instructions, construct maintain and/or repair structural woodwork such as: repair and install counters, cabinets, benches, partitions, floors, floors, doors, stairs, ladders, building framework, roof structures, floor, and ceiling tile, Install paneling.

· Fit and install windows, doors, doorframes, etc.

·Select and install various sound insulation materials.

·Lay out work as required.

· Select specified type of lumber or other material.

·Shape materials to prescribed measurements.

·Construct concrete forms and pouring chutes; may do some concrete finishing.

·Answer emergency calls to make minor repairs to locks, remove broken keys, etc.

·Install or replace various kinds of building hardware, such as door closes, antipanic hardware, hinges, lock sets, etc.

·Keep tools and machinery of the trade in good condition.

·Repair or replace chalkboards and bulletin boards.

·May perform specialized duties such as building or repairing unusual, customized items.

Minimum Qualifications:

·At least 18 years old.

·Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of outside weather conditions.

·Ability to work safely.

·Must successfully pass a background check.

·Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

·Must pass an aptitude test (math, English, and critical thinking) with a score of at least 80%.

·Must be able to work full-time and attend evening educational classes.

·Ability to perform assigned work at a level appropriate for a Carpenter Apprentice.

·Ability to follow written and oral instruction.

·Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing as needed.

·Ability to learn and apply safe work practices, including but not limited to, hazardous waste management and handling, Injury and Illness Prevention Program, Confined Space procedures, and chemical safe practices.

·Ability to perform various maintenance and moving tasks including but not limited to, work from step ladders, must be able to lift heavy materials frequently each day, work overhead, kneel, stoop, stand, crawl, or sit for long periods of time, work in all types of weather.

·Ability to respond to emergency calls in the evening and on weekends.

·Willingness to work variable shifts and night or weekends.

Certificates and Licenses Required:

Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C Non-commercial Driver's License.

The expected pay for this position is $28.58 per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
