University of Iowa Health Care has an opening for a full-time Clinical Chaplain working in the Supportive and Palliative Care Program. The Clinical Chaplain is an integral part of the interprofessional Palliative Care Program serving patients referred to the Supportive and Palliative Care Service and those patients and families cared for within UI Health Care. This Chaplain, as the spiritual care case manager, coordinates the spiritual and/or religious care of patients and families. The Chaplain will conduct a spiritual care assessment and develop a spiritual plan of care for patients and families. They advocate for and with patients, families, and staff according to values consistent with individual belief systems.

Position responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Responds to all inpatient and outpatient consultations to the Supportive and Palliative Care Consult Service to provide spiritual services. Attends family meetings upon request.
  • Assesses patient and family spiritual needs, creates, and directs the spiritual plan of care as a part of the interprofessional plan of care, coordinating with other spiritual care providers, community clergy or spiritual leaders as desired by the patient or family.
  • Serves as a resource to medical and nursing staff in the provision of spiritual care.
  • Maintains current working knowledge of ethical principles and process, participating in institutional activities upon request.
  • Participates in the development and provision of grief support services for families and UI Health Care staff. This might include providing educational programs, remembrance services, rituals for staff etc.
  • Provides strong educational experience for all learners, staff, and patients and families in the arena of spiritual care for people with life threatening illnesses by being shadowed, giving in-services and formal presentations both in-house and in the community.
  • Mutually responsible for providing 24-hour on-call Chaplain coverage at UI Health Care, as scheduled by the Spiritual Services Department.
  • Administers the No One Dies Alone (NODA) program and helps to ensure its application.

Location: This position is located at the UI Health Care medical center at 200 Hawkins Drive, Iowa City, Iowa and is not eligible for remote work.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience Required:
  • A master's degree and Board Certified Chaplain or eligible to be board certified. Board certification is required within 2 years of hire.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and interpret ideas, information, and needs through appropriate communication methods and behaviors.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation. Demonstrates high attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with EMR (electronic medical record)
  • Experience in fast-paced, high-volume work environment
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with multi-disciplinary team
  • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • 3 - 5 years' clinical experience in Oncology or Palliative Care in the hospital, hospice, or homecare setting.
