Clinical Pharmacist - Acute Care, Weekend Option

The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, is seeking a weekend option (60%) Clinical Pharmacist to join our team. The clinical pharmacist is responsible for all aspects of medication preparation and dispensing throughout the institution. This weekend option (60%) position will staff primarily in IV Admixture Pharmacy and may also staff operational shifts in the Adult Satellite, Central Pharmacy, and OR satellite. The days will be consistent in that it will be every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoon/evening. The hours to staff those three days will be at or around 1430-2300. The clinical pharmacist oversees preparation and dispensing of sterile and non-sterile products, to all acute care service areas and ambulatory clinics. In addition, the clinical pharmacist may complete order verification and provide therapeutic drug monitoring for select patient populations.

Position Responsibilities:

Medication Preparation and Dispensing

  • Oversee pharmacy technicians while staffing in dispensing locations.
  • Serve as a contact for medication distribution questions for pharmacy team members and other healthcare professionals.
  • Safely and accurately verify sterile and non-sterile compounded products following USP < 800>, < 797>, and < 795> guidelines, especially for parenteral nutrition and eye drops.
  • Check pre-packaged medications, automated dispensing cabinet batches, floorstock, emergency drug trays, and ambulance kits.
  • Troubleshoot automation utilized in dispensing locations.
  • Identification and assistance in resolution of medication system issues.
  • Assist with inventory control including controlled substances
  • Reporting of medication errors and process improvement suggestions
  • Serve on intra- and interdepartmental committees as needed.

  • Order Verification and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM)
  • Evaluate medication orders to ensure accuracy and appropriateness.
  • Utilize Epic dispense prep and compounding and repackaging whenever possible to ensure accuracy of prepared medications.
  • Complete pharmacokinetic assessment of drug dosing on appropriate patients.
  • Carry out, through interventions and education, protocol antibiotic and MUE initiatives.
  • Provide drug information to other healthcare professionals.
  • Identify high risk medication therapy be defined admission criteria and reviews the appropriate Selective Monitoring System (SMS) protocol.
  • Complete required departmental competencies.

  • Other duties as assigned

    Weekend Option Schedule:

    Staff members are scheduled to work 24 hours (either three 8-hour shifts; two 12-hour shifts, or a combination which equals at least 24 hours) within the time frame of 3:00 pm Friday through 7:30 am Monday. The staff member's appointment percentage FTE must be completed within the week (Sunday to Saturday). For all hours worked during this time period, a differential of fifty percent (50%) will be paid. If the time worked qualifies for shift differential, it will be paid, but no additional weekend differential will be paid. Staff will be scheduled to work 24 weekends in a six-month period and will be scheduled two (2) weekends off in that six-month period.

    Education Requirements:
    • Pharm. D. (Doctor of Pharmacy) degree or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy
    • Current licensure by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners is required. Includes those eligible for obtaining this licensure.
    Experience Requirements:
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Job related experience with and/or commitment to service excellence.
    • Professional experience working effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
      Desired Qualifications:
      • Experience in hospital pharmacy setting is highly desired.
      • One year of applicable pharmacy experience is preferred.
      • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or eligibility for completing BLS certification.
