Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Endoscopy Technician is a member of the procedural team whose role is to facilitate quality patient care through assisting the physician during endoscopic procedures and providing delegated patient care activities within specified limits under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse in the endoscopy department. The Endoscopy Technician also assists with the use, maintenance and cleaning of endoscopy equipment and supplies.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Participates in quality improvement and risk management activities; assists in maintaining compliance with JCAHO, Indiana State Board of Health accreditation and other internal and external regulatory standards
Maintains competency and attends mandatory training and in-services
Supports and upholds established hospital and department policies, procedures, objectives, quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control, requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies
Performs job responsibilities in a cost-effective manner to avoid waste of hospital resources without jeopardizing quality of care and service
Independently uses "down time" in assigned area to help co-workers with their responsibilities
Provides basic patient care, including personal hygiene, management of patient belongings, patient observation, measuring and recording vital signs, giving enemas, starting IV's and assisting with patient discharge
Alters activities/behaviors as described in the area/unit age-specific and/or job specific competencies to reflect/ensure care is appropriate to the age of each patients
Demonstrates a cooperative nature with physicians, nurses and all other customers while responding to the needs and requests of the patients
Maintains a clean and safe patient care environment, implements and follows infection control procedures while following unit policy for cleaning and disinfection of equipment
Assists the physician and RN during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
Maintains appropriate levels of supplies in each endoscopy procedure room and other patient care area in the department
Prepares the procedure room according to schedule and procedure requirements and ensuring the correct equipment and supplies are properly set up and functioning
Promotes safe patient care by placing blood pressure cuff, sensor for pulse oximeter, oxygen nasal cannula and cardiac monitoring electrodes appropriately if not already placed by the RN
Provides both emotional and physical support to patients during procedures and assists with patient positioning, equipment use and management, and other therapeutic interventions during the procedure
Performs a procedure time out and a specimen time out with other procedure team members on every patient
Ensures all specimens are properly collected and labeled prior to being removed from the room and sent to the lab
Maintains an orderly area for equipment, supplies, and environment in the procedural suite, the storage rooms, and all other areas of the department
Cleans the procedure room, equipment and expedites room turnover
Takes call after hours, weekends and holidays, assists during travel procedures as assigned
Properly handles instruments and equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations and infection control standards cleaning, disinfecting and reprocessing scopes and other instruments
Performs competent troubleshooting of malfunctioning equipment; if further service is required, processes equipment, informs manager, and calls biomedical engineering; safely high-level disinfects and prepares damaged scopes for shipping and ensures the scope has been properly repaired before returning it to service
Assists to identify cause of equipment damage and initiates measures to prevent further damage; provides ongoing feedback to manager regarding the condition of the equipment and when replacement of equipment is needed

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Ideal candidate will have two (2) years previous related hospital experience, CNA preferred
  • BLS certification

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients services. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data/interpret appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age-specific needs. Ability to use age appropriate communication and cognitive skills detailed in the department/area/unit specific/age specific competencies.
  • Requires good auditory and visual acuity. Cannot be color blind
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time in one place in a dark small area
  • Ability to follow instructions (verbal/written) and work under pressure
  • Possess technical ability with fine motor skills and excellent manual dexterity to have the ability to learn to operate and very expensive, fragile, technically complex equipment. Must be capable of learning to troubleshoot error messages and malfunctions and make minor repair interventions
  • Knowledge of/body mechanics involved in moving equipment, carts, and wheelchairs long distances; positioning, turning, transferring, lifting, moving patients weighing up to 500 lbs.
  • Must possess integrity, and compassion
  • Knowledge of Infection Control, and understanding the difference between clean, high-level disinfection, and sterile state
  • Must have excellent computer skills, and working knowledge of windows based software, and Microsoft office and e-mail
  • Demonstrable organizational skills, strict attention to details
  • Requires a mature attitude towards patients and co-workers
