Description of Work:

The Department of Electrical and Computing Engineering (https://ece.unl.edu) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) is seeking applicants for a faculty position at the rank of Full Professor in the field of Systems Engineering. This initiative will provide a nucleus for further hiring in this technical area. The successful candidate will be expected to lead in developing nationally recognized research and academic programs in systems engineering. The educational programs may include:

  1. Developing a new, online Master of Science in Systems Engineering degree program and related certificate programs targeted at working professionals, including those employed by the various defense contractors.
  2. Developing a new Doctor of Philosophy in Systems Engineering degree program to support the future research efforts necessary for a robust national economy and national defense, such as nuclear command, control, and communications (NC3).
  3. Developing a new ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering degree program for the next generation of engineering workforce.
Candidates are expected to have an outstanding publication record, a history of funded research, and a strong national/international reputation in the area of systems engineering and related topics. All candidates must demonstrate a commitment to contributing to a culture that supports diversity and inclusion. Preference will be given to candidates with experience building higher education degree programs.

The successful candidate will be based on the Scott Campus in Omaha, NE and housed in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. This will facilitate interactions with USSTRATCOM, the UNO College of Information Sciences and Technology, and other entities involved in the NC3 effort.

The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering consists of approximately 35 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 400 undergraduate students, and 120 graduate students co-located in two cities, Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska. An outstanding infrastructure exists for conducting research, including central facilities housing state-of-the-art instrumentation and computing, such as the Holland Computing Center (https://hcc.unl.edu). Opportunities for collaborations across the University of Nebraska include the University of Nebraska Medical Center; the University of Nebraska-Omaha College of Information Science & Technology; the Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research; the Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior; the Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory; the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility; Innovation Campus; and other state- and federally-funded research centers and programs.

  • Ph.D. in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a closely aligned area, including communication systems, control systems, nuclear systems, etc.
  • Credentials and a distinguished scholarly record that qualify the applicant for a tenured faculty position in the electrical and computer engineering department.
  • Ability to think broadly and develop research and programmatic activities across many systems-related disciplines.
  • Understanding of how to build productive relationships with faculty, students, administrative leaders, and external partners across various disciplines and organizational units.
  • Ability to understand, and work effectively with diverse faculty viewpoints.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills.
  • Passion for promoting the systems programs and developing strong partnerships with industry, other universities, government agencies such as STRATCOM, and other partners.
  • Demonstrated experience in systems sciences and engineering research.
  • Proven experience in leadership, strategic planning, and development.
  • Experience with mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with building higher education degree programs.
