Job Description:


The Head of Digital Scholarship services is responsible for planning, implementing, and managing current and emerging research support services, including, digital scholarship, digital humanities, data management, scholarly communications and digital maker space technologies. This position collaborates with faculty and staff to build and nurture campus partnerships with Information Technology Services, the Division of Research, Harpur College's Digital and Data Studies program and others. They work in a collegial environment, where communication and collaboration are two of our critical values for supporting each other, the Libraries, and the campus community.


This is a 12-month faculty position, at the rank of Senior Assistant or Associate Librarian with a minimum salary starting at $75,000. Rank and salary are dependent upon the successful candidate's experience and qualifications.


The position reports to the Senior Director for Library Technology and Digital Strategies.


Librarians at Binghamton University are faculty members and are expected to contribute significantly to the profession.



Duties and Responsibilities


  • Maintains, envisions, and implements services aligned with the research and scholarship lifecycle, supporting digital humanities, data management, geospatial information, and other related areas.
  • Provides leadership for planning and implementation of multidisciplinary digital scholarship projects that support faculty and students' scholarly activities at an R1 institution.
  • Provides supervision for a team of librarians and staff related to workload distribution, goal setting, performance evaluation, and professional development.
  • Manages projects, services, educational programming and corresponding documentation.
  • Oversees the newly constructed digital scholarship center.
  • Provides consultation to researchers for grant requirements related to federal Public Access Policies regarding data management, sharing, and open access dissemination of data.
  • Works with library staff to strengthen programs related to digital scholarship, digital collections, digital preservation, scholarly communications, maker space, and other digital initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with Digital Scholarship in areas such as Harpur College of Arts and Sciences Digital & Data Studies Minor and the bi-annual Digital Humanities Research Institute.
  • Participates in a work culture that promotes diversity and anti-racism and actively works to eliminate or mitigate the effects of systemic racism and bias.
  • Stays current on new trends and tools related to digital scholarship, open access, scholarly communications, research data initiatives, platforms, computational methods, and software.
  • Contributes significantly to the profession to meet the Libraries' standards of scholarship.
  • Participate in library, University, and National service.

About the Binghamton University Libraries:


The Binghamton University Libraries provides research collections in electronic (over 2 million and growing) and print (1.7 million items) formats with an extensive array of databases and e-packages (over 400), archival and distinctive printed materials in Special Collections as well as services with a variety of student-centered study spaces. With three public locations (Glenn G. Bartle Library, Science Library and the University Downtown Center Library) and an off-site Collections Management Facility, our aim is to provide access to primary research materials and resources befitting an R1 research institution.



Requirements:


Minimum Qualifications


  • Master's degree from an ALA accredited library or information science program or an ALA approved foreign equivalent.
  • Two years demonstrated experience in digital scholarship, digital humanities, data research management, scholarly communications, maker technology, or another relevant functional area.
  • Two years supervisory experience and/or evidence of the ability to be an effective team leader who fosters an inclusive, efficient, and collegial workplace.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience planning, managing, and assessing new research or digital scholarship services.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of key issues and trends in research support, digital scholarship, digital humanities, and academic libraries at an R1 institution.
  • Strong record of professional service and publication/presentations at a national level.
  • Three or more years of management/supervisory experience.

  • Ability to work well both independently and in a collaborative environment and to contribute to professional service.
  • Exemplary interpersonal and written communication skills plus a demonstrated commitment to professional development/achievement.
  • Ability to create an exciting, future-oriented library.
  • Strong digital pedagogy to create exemplary learning experiences.
  • Knowledge of scholarly communications practices.
