Other Conditions: Contingent on course offerings and student demand, to begin approximately Fall 2025, availability of funds, and actual staffing requirements. The position may be converted from 11 to 9 months or 9 to 11 months based on operational needs. Duties and Responsibilities: Under general supervision, design, deliver, and assess instruction in Biology in terms of course competencies and institutional and program-level student-learning outcomes. Develop and/or update course content and materials and teaching and assessment strategies and methods to:Improve student attainment of learning outcomes;Address the learning needs of the college's diverse students;Integrate thinking and writing skills into course content, as appropriate; andUse technology to support instruction.Plan, organize, and independently carry out independent instructional and non-instructional assignments. Perform other teaching-related duties that include, but are not limited to, preparing course syllabi and maintaining office hours for academic advising, and for conferring with students about coursework (one office hour per week per three-credit class). Regular workload may include evening and weekend classes, continuing-education classes, distance-education classes, and teaching at off-campus sites. Non-teaching duties include:Working collegially to provide service to the department and college,Engaging in public service related to one's professional status and/or expertise,Engaging in professional development,Engaging in professional or scholarly activities related to one's discipline or teaching, andDevelopment of state-of-the-art lecture curriculum, and learning technologies for on-campus and/or online courses.Perform related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in Biology, Microbiology, Marine Biology, Molecular and/or Cell Biology, Zoology, Conservation Biology & Environmental Science, Ecology, Global Environmental Science, Natural Resources and Environmental Management, Biomedical Sciences, or any Life Sciences. Note: Minimum qualifications must be met by the effective date of appointment.
Desirable Qualifications: Successful teaching of courses in general Biology (or similar Biological Sciences courses) at the post-secondary level, as substantiated by student and peer assessments.Evidence of ability to work in a collegial manner with peers, department chairs, and administrators.Evidence of experience integrating writing, technology, and thinking skills in teaching Biology.Ability to write clear prose as substantiated by an attached primary publication.Successful use of technology to support instruction inside and outside of the traditional classroom.Commitment to the mission and values of the community college with its open-door and multicultural populations.Ability to initiate, execute, and complete projects, including setting-specific objectives/competencies and measuring results.Willingness to participate in departmental or campus wide initiative (e.g. develop and supervise STEM student research projects and pathways, service learning, Hawaii-Asia-Pacific emphasis, and others).Work or teaching experience in areas of specialization including biomedical sciences, cell and molecular biology, marine biology, and evolutionary biology.Evidence of successful first hand grant submission and support.Provide evidence of first hand or student research projects that have been presented at an external scientific conference.Evidence of commitment to Kapi'olani Community College's vision of positioning itself as a model indigenous serving institution whose graduates strengthen the social, economic, and sustainable advancement of Hawai'i and the world.
