Instructor of Adult Learning (Full-Time)

The Instructor for Adult Learning position is a full-time, grant-funded position that includes hours at the ASU-Newport campus and off-site locations in Northeast Arkansas, including correctional facilities. The instructor will facilitate Adult Education classes during scheduled times using best practices.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provides effective instruction for Adult Education students using state-approved best practices:

a. Designs and selects classroom activities and lessons that help students progress toward skills achievement

b. Counsel students monthly on their progress in the classroom, making applicable notes in the students' files

c. Participates in team teaching and planning as appropriate

d. Maintains order and discipline in the classroom

e. Protects and maintains the confidentiality of student information and records at all times

f. Communicates resource needs to ASU-Newport Adult Education Office staff.

g. Maintains the integrity of all classroom materials

2. Assists in achieving Adult Education program goals and measurable objectives in support of grant guidelines and the College's mission and purposes, strategic goals, and vision statements:

a. Uses students' assessment data to develop educational plans for each student

b. Participates in the administration of assessments and placement tools to determine student placement

c. Tracks student progress and attendance to ensure post-tests are administered promptly by reviewing the program database system

d. Documents student performance: daily attendance, test results, and classroom work. Report student data weekly to the database administrator

e. Participates in GED graduation and Adult Education recruitment activities

f. Works with ASU-Newport and other state agencies (i.e., Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act - WIOA) to promote student retention and advancement to post-secondary education or workplace opportunities through programs such as Accelerating Opportunities and WAGE.

3. Engages in professional development for job enhancement and growth

a. Attends conferences and/or workshops to learn about developing practices and program requirements.

b. Attends college advisory and registration meetings and other workshops related to student retention and success

c. Completes the required number of professional development hours for program compliance

4. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A valid and current Arkansas Teaching License is required. Must maintain up-to-date licensure and credentials, as required by the State of Arkansas. General computer skills required, attention to detail, ability to organize and execute multiple tasks and responsibilities with minimal to no supervision. Must have a demonstrated track record of professional dependability and reliability, including punctuality and attention to detail and the ability to work as part of a team. Must demonstrate knowledge and use of effective teaching, strategies and processes which lead to positive academic student outcomes.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor's or Master's degree in Elementary Education or Secondary Education. Full-time Adult Education teachers who do not have a license in Adult Education, must obtain this license within three (3) years of the date of their initial employment.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR FUNDS, PROPERTY, and EQUIPMENT Maintain program provided furniture, fixtures, and technology as required

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES None

COMMUNICATION SKILLS Experience in peer-to-peer communication for program interaction between online learning program and on-site adult learning

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS The ability to teach math at the adult basic education level, regardless of licensure area, including math instruction taught at the K-6 grade level equivalency

CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS The online adult learning instructor works autonomously with intermittent guidance from the Director; thus, the ideal applicant has critical thinking skills.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED The Director of Adult Education along with other instructors will provide training support to the instructor for adult learning.

PLANNING Full-time instructors will assist in program planning and operations.

DECISION MAKING The Director of Adult Education oversees program-related decision making; however, the instructor performs work operations which permit frequent opportunity for decision-making of major and minor importance. ANALYTICAL ABILITY / PROBLEM SOLVING Ideally, the applicant can identify a problem, infer solutions, collect information through research, and execute solutions. Additionally, the applicant should be able to learn how to organize and sort data.

The adult education instructor will have frequent contact with program participants to improve retention and department staff for program operations daily.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS A valid Arkansas Teaching License (K-12), Full-time Adult Education teachers who do not have a license in Adult Education, must obtain this license within three (3) years of the date of their initial employment.

Computer Operating System Ability: PC or iOS

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or regularly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. This work involves walking, moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly moving from one classroom to another. This work involves talking, expressing, or exchanging ideas through spoken words; those activities must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and quickly. This work involves hearing, receiving detailed information through oral communication, and making fine discriminations in sound.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS The instructor is subject to inside environmental conditions, protection from weather conditions but not temperature.
