Lead Custodian

General Statement of Job:
The Lead Custodian maintains high standards of cleanliness and service by inspecting work to ensure conformance with established standards. Supervises and assigns duties to custodians.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Maintains high standards of cleanliness and service by inspecting work to ensure standards are met; if standards are not met, investigates reason and takes corrective action.
  2. Ensures facilities are secured and opened at the appropriate times.
  3. Conducts training on duties, standard operating procedures and safety for new and existing employees.
  4. Monitors and assesses work performance of assigned personnel.
  5. Utilizes the college’s work order system (CMMS) to note time spent and the work performed relative to specific work request.
  6. Assists in moving and/or assembly of furniture.
  7. Sets up for special functions on campus, as directed.
  8. Cleans and disinfects all campus facilities (restrooms, offices, classrooms, labs, hallways and Child Development Center); stocks facilities with paper and supplies.
  9. Vacuums and spot cleans carpets and furniture; sweeps and mops tile floors.
  10. Cleans marker boards, desktops, windows, doors and walls.
  11. Collects and removes trash in accordance with established procedures.
  12. Reports and responds to emergency calls for custodial assistance; reports security and maintenance concerns.
  13. Identifies stains and uses proper chemicals for removal.
  14. Reports all necessary building or equipment repair requirements for assigned facilities to Custodial Supervisor.
  15. Responsible for collection and ensures security for keys to assigned personnel and/or facilities.
  16. Responsible for managing, issuing, and delivering custodial material and supplies, as directed.
  17. Adheres to safety and health regulations.
  18. Operates and conducts routine preventive maintenance on College vehicles; notifies appropriate personnel of any vehicle maintenance required.
  19. Travels throughout the college district, as needed.
  20. Supervises and assigns duties to assigned custodians and assists custodians with custodial and other work.
  21. Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience:
  1. High School Diploma or GED required.
  2. At least two (2) years of experience in custodial operations required.


Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
  1. Security Sensitive position: all applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy.
  2. In addition, subject to a federal background check.
  3. Must have or qualify for a valid Texas driver’s license, proof of liability insurance, and be insurable under South Texas College’s insurance policy for driving.
  4. Must maintain authorization to drive College-owned vehicles.
