About the Department

The Proteomics Platform at the University of Chicago is a research facility located in the Knapp Center for Biomedical Discovery (KCBD). The mission of the facility is to develop and apply advanced proteomics techniques to answer both basic and translational scientific questions with the help of state-of-the-art mass spectrometry instruments. We offer scientific consultation tailored to each project, proteomics sample preparation services, and education to help researchers design, perform, and interpret complex proteomics data. We aim to support both the University of Chicago research community and beyond.

Job Summary

The job manages scientific research projects or scientific research facilities. Uses considerable on-the-job experience to ensure compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies. Works independently to write articles, reports and manuscripts, and presents research findings at meetings and/or conferences.

Responsibilities

• Diligently perform routine laboratory maintenance tasks and engage in proteomics sample processing, method development, and optimization to ensure the lab's research activities run efficiently.
  
• Execute LC-MS/MS and other mass spectrometry techniques with precision, producing quantitative global and targeted proteomics data.
  
• Collaborate with investigators to align on research objectives and ensure data relevance for a diverse range of projects.
  
• Participate in scientific discussions and brainstorming regarding experimental design, and new technological development and innovation around various research themes requiring proteomics.
  
• Stay updated with the latest techniques, tools, and advancements in the proteomics domain and actively seek opportunities for training and skill enhancement to contribute effectively to the platform's research initiatives.
  
• Maintain technical and administrative support for a research project.
  
• Analyze and maintain data and/or specimens. Conduct literature reviews. Assist with preparation of reports, manuscripts, and other documents.
  
• Install, set up, and perform experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.
  
• Take a lead role in optimizingproteomics protocols that can streamline processes and enhanced research outcomes.
  
• Provide trainings and supports in lab technician/junior scientists, ensuring that our team is proficient with the latest techniques and technologies in proteomics.
  
• Consult with our collaborators in the IP or other general projects, aiding in the advancement of their research projects.
  
• Actively brainstorm with core leadership contributing innovative ideas that can lead to significant technological advancements in the core.
  
• Uses subject matter and best practices knowledge to perform lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Works independently to assist with project design.
  
• Guides data collection, evaluation and analysis. Designs and manages databases. Writes reports, articles and manuscripts.
  
• Performs other related work as needed.
  

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

• Master or PhD degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
  

Experience:

• Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience with Orbitrap mass spectrometry instruments, contributing to or leading multiple projects utilizing these platforms.
  
• Demonstrated success in a mass spectrometry-based research laboratory, with a proven record of contributions to research, including publications and presentations.
  
• Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including researchers, technicians, and external partners.
  
• Proficiency in data analysis software specific to proteomics and a strong ability to interpret complex datasets.
  
• Prior experience working in a research laboratory or core facility, particularly with mass spectrometry-based research.
  
• Proven ability to manage and contribute to multiple research projects simultaneously.

• Strong mentorship and leadership capabilities, with a commitment to training and supporting junior scientists and technicians.
  
• Demonstrated ability to develop and optimize novel proteomics workflows together with Platform Director.
  
• Strong time management skills, ensuring tasks are completed on schedule, and ability to adapt to unscheduled requests.
  

Working Conditions

• May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance (working with heavy metals), shipping of hazardous material (shipping cryo-samples).
  
• Working at a desk or sitting at a microscope.
  
• Ability to go up and down stairs.
  
• Ability to move wheeled LN2 tanks.
