Job Description:


Budget Title: Instructional Support Specialist (SL-4)


Salary: Commensurate with experience


The Binghamton University Libraries are seeking an innovative and proactive Makerlab Coordinator to lead the development, implementation, and management of our brand new MakerLab in the Glenn G. Bartle Library. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating a welcoming and inclusive environment that fosters creativity, collaboration, and hands-on learning experiences for students, faculty, and staff across various disciplines. The facility will be outfitted with 3-D printers, scanners, laser cutters, and other innovative prototyping and fabrication technologies. The MakerLab Coordinator is responsible for the facility's day-to-day operation, training of student employees and users, and maintaining equipment and supplies. The Coordinator integrates new MakerLab services into the curriculum and facilitates classroom visits. The position will also promote a supportive and accessible student experience.


The successful candidate will be:


  • An individual familiar with maker technologies who enjoys introducing others to the equipment in a safe manner.
  • A positive leader who can effectively collaborate with others and manage a team of student employees to organize visits and training opportunities.
  • An individual who can prioritize duties, focusing on attention to detail and ensuring health, safety, and logistical requirements.
  • Customer service oriented and able to interact with a diverse constituency.

Duties and Responsibilities


  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of the new MakerLab, including the upkeep of the physical space, hours of operation, services, technology, equipment, and supplies.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises student workers.
  • Develops and implements policies, procedures, and best practices for the MakerLab to ensure safe and effective operation.
  • Develops training and maintenance protocols for MakerLab equipment.
  • Plans and conducts instructional workshops, training sessions, and outreach events to promote the MakerLab and its resources.
  • Conducts routine maintenance and coordinates service, repair, and installation of equipment.
  • Evaluates and assesses the impact and effectiveness of the MakerLab, maintaining usage statistics and user feedback.
  • Collaborates with appropriate administrative staff on the marketing of the Makerlab across the university to encourage course-related and co-curricular student use of the facility.
  • Occasionally organizes special 'make' events for students, faculty and staff groups, which may include evening and weekend hours.
  • Stays current on Makerspace technology and services within academic libraries.
  • Submits mandatory and requested reports, documentation, and information in a timely manner.
  • Serves as a positive champion for the libraries, internally and externally, in alignment with the overall mission and current priorities.
  • Participates in a work culture that promotes diversity and anti-racism and actively works to eliminate or mitigate the effects of systemic racism and bias.
  • Participates in library and University committees and external professional organizations as appropriate.


Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree or higher
  • Experience using 3D technologies, such as printers or scanners
  • Experience with maker instruction, including leading workshops and hands-on learning projects, including translating complex concepts to diverse learners
  • Skill in navigating patrons through the prototyping process
  • Experience with CAD and CAM processes
  • Excellent project management, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work evening and weekend schedules as needed
  • Self-directed with the ability to lead maker projects
  • Ability to multitask and work in a time-critical innovation environment
  • Passion for outreach and establishing connections between making and the organization's mission and strategic plan
