Shift: Full-Time (40 hrs. M-F ) Days, evenings, (depending on availability) occasional on call and weekends may be required

Work Location: UM Hospital UTower - PACU Recovery

1. Transports patients and/or visitors from department/unit to department/unit and to and from ancillary
areas to include admissions and discharge and remains attentive until their transportation arrives.
2. Assists at the main lobby greeting patients and/or assisting with transport between assignments.
3. Identifies the correct patient for transportation prior to movement by asking the patient for name and
date of birth and comparing that against the armband while maintaining patient confidentiality and
patient privacy.
4. Practices good body mechanics when transferring and/or lifting patients.
5. Obtains and transports paperwork/chart with the patient.
6. Observes proper procedures and techniques during patient transport: monitors oxygen and intravenous
apparatus and reports any problems or changes in patient's condition (difficulty breathing, complaints
of discomfort, etc.) to nursing staff. Reports defective equipment to the appropriate manager for repair.
7. Keeps hallways clear by storing equipment in the appropriate storage areas and exercise caution when
moving stretchers, wheelchairs, and equipment to prevent damage to hospital property.
8. Stays current with emergency management by participating in drills, in-service training, evacuation
procedures, and internal/external disaster plans.
9. Adheres to precautionary methods for patients on precautions and uses personal protective equipment
as necessary and defined on precaution cards located outside of the patient room.
10. Exercises good hand-washing techniques and personal hygiene. Prepares, disinfects, and covers
equipment appropriately.
11. Communicates effectively with patients, visitors, and staff and is considerate of patient age, gender,
culture, and stated preferences, while always maintaining patient privacy and respect. (Knock,
introduce, and ask for permission before entering any patient room; provide the patient a sheet for
privacy and a blanket for comfort, etc.)
12. Responds promptly to requests, problems, and questions from physicians, staff, patients, and visitors.
Notifies appropriate personnel upon arrival/departure of patient and/or miscellaneous items at
unit/department while adhering to wearing a tracker.
13. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent

Certification and Licensing:
Basic Life Support (BLS)

Experience:
No experience is required.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions
1. The department operates 24/7, providing continuous services.
2. Transfers bodies to the morgue following appropriate protocols.
3. Meets productivity measures and benchmarks set by the hospital which is reported quarterly.
4. Oversees hospital bed management, encompassing tasks such as coordinating bed movements,
preparing operating rooms and ambulatory surgery units with the required beds for daily cases, and
facilitating the transportation of beds to and from the repair shop.
5. Responsible for efficiently managing the return of rental beds. This involves confirming arrangements
with the rental company, transporting the beds to the designated location, and ensuring timely pickup.
6. Conducts rounds to clear hallways of beds, wheelchairs, and stretchers, ensuring that these items are
promptly returned to their designated departments.
7. Responsible for transportation for all admissions, discharges, unit transfers, radiation oncology,
dialysis, and outpatient areas and clinics.
8. Assists other areas in times of understaffing, providing necessary support to ensure smooth
operations.
