Department Information

The Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research conducts basic science and translational research within the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. The Wells Center houses more than 300 faculty investigators, staff, and trainees seeking answers to the most pressing questions related to childhood illness.

With the collaboration between scientists and physicians, the center aims to increase knowledge of causes and mechanisms of serious pediatric diseases. Our goal is to develop innovative approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of sick children in Indiana and beyond.

Job Summary

The Gaston lab is looking for a motivated and creative lab analyst to join our group. Our lab is focused on translating basic science discoveries from the lab into therapies and diagnostic tools relevant to respiratory medicine. Our current studies include asthma and primary ciliary dyskinesia. Applicant will take over studies already in preparation.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Conducts technical aspects of research studies including, but not limited to, study logistics, production and collection of data, data management, and study documentation for quality assurance review.
  • Assists students, postdocs and senior scientists with research needs Performs biochemical analysis of samples (Western blotting, Elisa, other assays).
  • Analyzes obtained experimental results, preparing figures for scientific publications.
  • Operates laboratory instruments and performing equipment maintenance.
  • Follows biosafety and chemical safety protocols Assists in the development of operating procedures, protocols, and guidelines.
  • Participates in weekly laboratory meeting.
  • Maintains the accurate record of performed experiments.
  • Monitors inventory levels of needed materials, supplies, and equipment in support of research projects.
  • Prepares reports and maintains all relevant documentation.
  • Works as part of a team and in close cooperation with senior researchers and students.
  • Supports clinical research trial visits.

General Responsibilities
  • Performs moderately complex experiments while following research techniques and procedures.
  • Develops procedures and protocols in collaboration with leadership.
  • Prepares research reports or analyses for projects.
  • Maintains safety records and ensures safety/compliance procedures and protocols are followed.
  • May provide guidance and support to junior-level staff in laboratory operations.

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Experimental approaches being used in the lab include rt-PCR, genotyping, western blotting, single cell RNA-seq, primary cell culture, live cell imaging, immunofluorescence, and SPR.

Advertised Salary

$47,000 - $52,000 per year based on experience, skill level, education, and training.
