Description of Work:

The Department of Entomology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is seeking a broadly trained entomologist who will address the management of arthropods that transmit pathogens that affect humans and animals. The research assistant professor will contribute to a research team that focuses on chemical strategies to reduce arthropod-borne pathogens and prevent human and animal/livestock community disease transmission. The incumbent will be responsible for the development of next-generation bioinformatics and sequencing platforms for the de novo design of high-throughput in vivo and in vitro assays to screen large chemical repositories for mosquito-active compounds to reduce community transmission of malaria. As part of a faculty team in the Department of Entomology, the incumbent is expected to develop a competitive research program and actively pursue external funding sources. The incumbent is also expected to participate in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and contribute to the undergraduate and graduate education programs (i.e., bioinformatics course) in the Department of Entomology. The incumbent is expected to collaborate with public health teams to provide consultation and expertise in arthropod-borne disease programs, such as public outreach and education, media inquiries, public health case investigation and emergencies, and/or management of arthropod-borne diseases. It is expected that the incumbent will publish in peer-reviewed journals.

The research assistant professor will contribute to the integrated research land-grant mission of the home unit and IANR, as an effective scholar and citizen, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy. Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in entomology or a relevant field of study.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of post-doctoral and/or professional experience.
  • A record of developing next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics platforms for data mining and analyses of large biological data sets leading the arthropod pest management.
  • Research experience in next-generation bioinformatics, molecular biology, genetics, and sequencing technologies.
  • Evidence of teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses of bioinformatics, molecular biology, and/or genetics.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • A record of research focused on next-generation technologies and applications for arthropod pest management and protection.
  • Experience working with teams (e.g., local, state, federal) whose specific interest is arthropod pest management programs.
  • Evidence of work with diverse or underrepresented communities or groups.
  • Strong self-motivation, excellent critical thinking skills, great interpersonal communication, great time management, ability to adapt to new situations or issues, and ability to adapt to changing structures.
  • Evidence of public outreach and education activities.
  • Evidence of competitive research funding.
  • Evidence of peer-reviewed journal publications.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with students, professionals, and the public.
  • Ability to secure financial support for research programs, including grants and contracts commensurate with career level.
