Job Summary:
Safety Monitors in this role are responsible for creating a welcoming and safe environment for homeless adults who are unsheltered. The goal of the Weymouth Winter Shelter is to offer lifesaving shelter to unsheltered homeless adults throughout the winter months and to support safety and engagement of people who are reticent to utilize emergency shelters. The Weymouth Winter Shelter offers a low threshold environment that is predicated on harm reduction principles. The Safety Monitor in this role will promote safety by offering respectful support and consistent application of policies and procedures established for the safety of each person served and all stakeholders of the Weymouth Winter Shelter community including check in and property, guest engagement, and building rounds.
This is a non-exempt position.
Essential Functions of Position:
• Answer phone lines, transfer calls as appropriate
• Monitor guests and grounds for unsafe situations or conditions
• Check guest into the shelter
• Secure guest belongings
• Orient guest to shelter expectations
• Monitoring bathrooms, allowing only 1 person to enter at a time and check for responsiveness
• Monitoring clients for impairment
• Monitoring clients in the waiting area
• Alert appropriate staff (Director, Office Manager, Nurse Manager) as to any safety concerns
• Writing up incident reports as needed.
• Anticipate situations that might escalate and work to de-escalate or get support when needed
• Helping to Ensure order in waiting area
• Working effectively with staff
• Ability to remain level headed in a stressful environment
• Respond to emergencies including overdoses
• To communicate in an effective and calm manner
• Providing excellent customer service to consumers
Job Requirements:
• Reception, security and excellent customer service skills
• The ability to communicate effectively with clientele and staff
• Maintaining proper boundaries with clientele
• Basic computer skills and Data Entry skills
• Experience in human services work strongly preferred
• High School diploma or GED
