Science Lab Safety Compliance Manager

General Statement of Job:
The Science Lab Compliance Manager collaborates with MSITB science department chairs, and with the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Department, to successfully develop, implement and evaluate safety procedures, programs, functions, and activities inside the Chemistry, Biology, Physical Science, and Engineering Laboratories. Conducts in person, once-a-semester, inspections of all science labs across the district. Assists with day-to-day coordination and safety compliance in accordance with the federal, state, local and institutional regulatory requirements, policies, standards, and procedures. Serves as the facilitator for the Academic Affairs Safety Committee and serves as the liaison for the division with the College Hazardous Safety lead.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Ensures compliance with federal, state, local, and institutional regulations.
  2. Responsible for managing, implementing and evaluating safety of procedures, programs, functions, and activities.
  3. Facilitates worker safety training programs; collaborates with the Environmental, Health and Safety personnel (EHS) to provide continuous trainings for all laboratory employees.
  4. Serves on College Safety Committee and leads Division Safety Committee.
  5. Works with Lab Coordinators and EHS personnel to maintain and revise the Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) annually and ensures faculty and staff acknowledge and comply with the CHP.
  6. Works with department chairs and lab coordinators to develop discipline-specific safety-related procedures, as needed.
  7. Works with EHS personnel to develop and update Science Lab Safety protocols.
  8. Works with Science Lab Coordinators and EHS personnel to develop safety and compliance training.
  9. Conducts once-a-semester safety audits of laboratory prep rooms, chemical storage rooms, and chemical/biological waste rooms division-wide and reports findings and recommendations to program chairs, dean, and vice president.
  10. Oversees science laboratory waste management in collaboration with lab coordinators and EHS personnel.
  11. On an annual basis, inspects Dual Credit science lab safety measures and reports findings and appropriate recommendations to dean, department chairs and dual enrollment office.
  12. Collaborates with EHS personnel to ensure inspections (such as: fire extinguishers, fume hoods, and gas valves) are conducted on a regular basis.
  13. Maintains safety training records for division organized trainings.
  14. Works with Lab Coordinators to ensure chemical inventory records are updated on a yearly basis and records retained as required by federal and state regulations.
  15. Reviews laboratory risk assessments and works with EHS personnel to ensure any facility related needs are available. .
  16. Works with Lab Coordinators to ensure all lab personnel receive proper training and authorization prior to operating equipment or handling hazardous chemicals.
  17. Reviews, investigates and recommends courses of action for Science Lab incidents.
  18. Responds to science lab related emergencies, as needed.
  19. Serves as a liaison between EHS department and the MSITB Division.
  20. Serves as Radiation Safety Officer for the division to ensure science labs are following state and federal regulations.
  21. Travels throughout the college district as needed.
  22. Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience:
  1. Bachelor’s Degree in a Science discipline required; Master’s Degree preferred.
  2. At least three (3) years of experience in laboratory safety, required.
  3. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification, preferred.


Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
  1. All applicants are subject to a national criminal background check under South Texas College policy.
  2. Security Sensitive position: In addition, subject to federal background check.
  3. Must have a valid Texas driver’s license.
  4. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certification, preferred.
