The salary range for this position is dependent on experience level ranging from $83,808 to $104,756.

This highly skilled individual will be responsible for supervising/performing work in energized substations while maintaining the reliability of the protective control systems. They will work with other professionals and technicians in a team environment on a variety of engineering projects, with a focus on substation and protection and automation. Typical scope includes commissioning new protective systems, drawing creation of substation integration and automation, substation control systems and modern microprocessor-based equipment. The day-to-day activities have a wide degree of variety involving multiple projects moving simultaneously.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Project detailed engineering, designs and calculations using standard methodology & principles including all phases such as: scoping and budgeting, conceptual engineering, engineering design, construction, and closeout.
  • Review and update electrical drawings, to include single-lines, three-lines, AC wiring, DC schematics and logic for new and existing Substation Projects.
  • Develop & specify equipment, assemble documents & other requirements for assignments of projects using depth & breadth of expertise in own discipline.
  • Final documentation per substation project to include electrical as-built drawings.
  • Work with operations staff to provide technical support for substation projects.
  • Perform administrative function such as technical writing, providing job status reports, requesting quotations, and ordering materials.
  • NERC compliancy which includes assisting with defining company programs to be compliant with the applicable various NERC standards as well as applicable company, local, state, and national codes
  • Travel to substation project sites within the northeast

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or equal
  • Greater than 5 years' experience in electrical substations, transmission systems, distribution systems operations up to 345kV, or protection and control design and construction.
  • Familiarity with Brownfield electromechanical relay substation
  • Knowledge of various industry standards such as OSHA, IEEE, IEC, NFPA, NETA, and NERC.
  • Advanced theoretical understanding of electrical power systems which includes knowledge of fault calculations (short-circuit), symmetrical components, protective coordination, and the use of fault analysis software to perform system modeling, short-circuit studies and arc flash hazard analysis studies (AFHA).
  • Advanced computer skills utilizing word processing, spreadsheets, email, facility control, management, and reporting systems. Must be able to use computerized diagnostic and troubleshooting tools.
  • Ability to interpret and follow a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations.
  • Must work well under pressure from job demands, multi-tasking ability essential.
  • Ability to collaborate across departments.
  • Work independently although supervision might be required.

Preference may be given to candidates with the following:

  • FE Certification and/or Professional Engineer Certification (PE)
  • Strong understanding of communication and SCADA protocols
  • Experience with AutoCAD
  • Experience with relay/logic testing and field commissioning
  • Experience with relay test sets (specifically the Manta MTS-5100 Test Set)
  • Experience with RTU's
  • Familiar with NERC Reliability Standards, like the PRC's
  • Experience with software such as ArcPro, ASPEN Relay Database and SEL ASELerator
