Job Summary
The Sheet Metal Sub-foreperson plans, schedules, coordinates, and supervises work of sheet metal workers and completes fabrication, installation, and repairs as a working sub-foreperson.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises, provides leadership, and assigns work to sheet metal workers to be completed in accordance with prioritized needs and schedules. Plans and organizes sheet metal maintenance and alteration work performed by sheet metal workers and other assigned personnel. Assists with estimates by providing labor and material costs for projects, which may include departmental charge-out, maintenance repairs, and preventative maintenance. Works closely with the work management center, project coordinators, engineering, and building maintenance. Monitors schedule and controls craft-related costs. Performs sheet metal work as needed or assigned.
  • Monitors work performance of assigned personnel and ensures satisfactory work quality and completion requirements are being met. Monitors work to ensure compliance with prevailing codes and university facilities standards as well as correct procedures and techniques. Visits job sites to ensure satisfactory work quality and completion requirements are being met.
  • Maintains records of work completed, material purchasing, overtime lists, and training records. Verifies and approves mobile timekeeping and/or timecards.
  • Participates in job/project meetings with other job/project stakeholders (e.g., campus customers, project coordinators, etc.). Participates in multi-craft work order review meetings with building maintenance supervision.
  • Responsible for tools, equipment, and materials assigned for use in the sheet metal shop. Inventories tools and equipment.
  • Provide leadership for emergency response during off normal working hours.
  • Makes recommendations for safety initiatives and programs, hiring and discipline, and addresses performance issues. Responsible for safety and policy enforcement.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

  • Additional Physical Demands
    1.Work is assigned through the Foreperson, work management group, service office, or the Director of Building Maintenance & Grounds or their designee in oral or written form. There is very limited supervision provided. The Sub-foreperson is responsible for ensuring the work or projects are completed properly in accord with statutes and codes in a safe and timely manner. The Sub-foreperson is expected to support the Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and management operational directions and philosophies of Facilities & Services. The Sub-foreperson must exemplify high standards of leadership, loyalty, craftsmanship, and dedication.
    2.Interacts with campus customers, supervision, peers, and employees. Creates a work environment which develops accountability for performance and develops teamwork and unity within the shop and throughout the university.
    3.May work in extreme weather conditions.
    4.Must be aware of potential danger from moving parts and equipment.
    5.May be exposed to dust, loud noise, smoke, and cleaning compounds.
    6.The workload associated with the position can be stressful at times.
    7.May work in temperature extremes ranging from freezing weather to steam tunnels.
    8.May work at heights to inspect equipment located on platforms or hung above tall ceilings.
    9.May work amid hazards of work sites such as dust, noise, and in areas such as coal-fired power plants, animal rooms, and laboratories.
    10.May be exposed to radiation and chemical fumes, molten lead, and welding arcs. Use of personal protective equipment is required when hazards exist.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • A current/valid journeymen card through the Sheet, Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation International Association Union (SMART).
    • Four (4) years (48 months) of work experience as a sheet metal worker.
    • Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver's license at time of hire.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Ability to work effectively with and understand customer needs and requirements.
    • Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, etc.
    • Thorough knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and safe and proper use of tools and equipment.
    • Ability to effectively supervise others (plan, organize, prioritize, assign, and follow up on assignments).
    • Ability to give directions both orally and in written form that are concise and understandable.
    • Ability to read and interpret drawings, sketches, and blueprints.
    • Thorough knowledge and understanding of all sheet metal work and university facilities standards.
    • This position requires the ability to multi-task on a routine basis due to the number of issues that must be dealt with daily.
    Appointment Information

    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 1938 - Sheet Metal Sub-Foreman position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search close date. Salary is established based on the prevailing rate and is currently $47.23/hour. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
