University Communications and Marketing is seeking an experienced social media content specialist to support the creation and coordination of communications materials, dynamic visuals, engagement strategies, written content, and integrated campaigns for institution-wide initiatives and priorities. This role also collaborates with communications team colleagues on online risk mitigation, sentiment analysis and reporting.

The ideal individual will be skilled in developing high-quality, consistently branded written content that encourages sharing, engagement, and promotion of highly valuable programs and initiatives. This specialist should be interested in not just producing dynamic content but also assessing its value and return on investment while working with diverse stakeholders to achieve associated program goals. The ideal candidate will be an effective project manager, a big-picture thinker, and an excellent written and verbal communicator.

Job Summary

This position reports directly to the Director of Social Media and is located within University Communications and Marketing.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Manages the creation of compelling strategic social media written content for several IU priority initiatives which includes authoring daily posts for X, Facebook, Instagram, Instagram Stories, TikTok, LinkedIn, Instagram Reels and TikTok.
  • Reviews content for spelling, grammar, publication, sentiment, quality and potential concerns prior to publishing and draft alt text, captions, scripts, and other written materials
  • Optimizes social media profiles with targeted keywords and descriptions for improved search ranking and apply branding and best practices to ensure content quality
  • Checks published posts to make sure all written content and image quality for quality and consistency.
  • Maintains and updates editorial calendars that elevate key messages aligned with the IU brand
  • Monitors, maintains, and moderates message, comments, and concerns in adherence with IU policy and best practice
  • Triages smart inbox messages, comments directed at IU branded accounts, and content mentioning or tagging IU regularly through the day, including outside of regular business hours
  • Builds and maintains tagging framework to track and categorize posts and campaigns, measuring success and conversation volume
  • Builds a framework of frequently asked questions, responses, primary contacts, accounts, etc.
  • Actively monitors emerging concerns, issues, and conversation and review, hide, and report on violations of IU community guidelines
  • Serves as a front line of defense and engagement for IU online communities and stakeholders
  • Manages and interacts with IU's audience and community across social media to grow accounts
  • Maintains a list of users that Indiana University can call on to create content (influencers) and build and maintain positive relationships with this group Comment, react, like, and promote user generated content celebrating Indiana University
  • Shares news stories, links, user generated content posts, and other potentially relevant content with team for elevation and amplification
  • Builds a framework of responses to positive moments shared on IU social media and how team will interact with them
  • Analyzes metrics for social media campaigns to organize in regular reports to be used for measuring success and determining strategic campaign adjustments which includes tracking data and creating reports to analyze impact of IU campaigns, content, community dialogues, and social content
  • Researches and makes recommendations on best practices for priority initiatives to reach target audiences on a variety of platforms
  • Stays updated on social trends and platform features, audience members, and best practices in social media to keep content relevant and fresh
  • Researches, sources, builds, manages, and nurtures online relationships/groups/communities
  • Prioritizes projects and develop roadmaps for the execution of content strategy recommendations
  • Ensures responsiveness and communicate availability
General Responsibilities
  • Develops and updates social media content and monitors brand's social networks, responding to comments and collecting feedback from audiences.
  • Creates comprehensive plans for social media engagement, including conducting market research to identify social media sites preferred by target audiences, engaging types of posts, and peak engagement posting times.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of social media on a variety of metrics, such as changes in website traffic, attendance at social media marketed events, and engagement by platform, audience, and type of post.
  • Regularly consults with staff, faculty, colleagues, departments, and/or other stakeholders to curate social media content to specific programs, goals, audiences, and objectives.
  • Ensures alignment with university mission, strategies, objectives, and brand guidelines across all social media platforms and content.
  • May provide organizational training on social media methodology and strategy.
  • May provide guidance to Social Media Assistants or lower-level Social Media Specialists.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism, public relations, or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years in relevant field
Preferred
  • 5 years of combined social media, content creation, digital strategy, and writing experience
  • 3 years of applying project management skills at an expert level

  • Demonstrated experience in written in communication, maximizing social media performance, SEO practices, and project management
  • Proficiency in Canva, Sprout (or similar platform), and social media channels

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
