STARS works closely with the rootEd Alliance - https://rootedalliance.org/. The rootEd Alliance is a non-profit organization that places college and career advisors in rural and small-town high schools to ensure every student graduates on a path to achieve career success and economic stability.

UChicago's admissions office consists of a staff of over 40 people, most of whom are Admissions Counselors. They manage marketing to and recruitment of prospective students as well as the admissions process for first year and transfer students into The College, and summer programs for high school students. Admissions also oversees programming directly tied to the STARS College Network's mission. Through the commitment to STARS, UChicago will be the central host for a group of college advisors intended to remotely support rural students in their college search at select schools across the country.

Job Summary

The STARS College Advisor Supervisor will be based in the Chicagoland area and able to travel for meetings and events to the University of Chicago campus located in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. They will lead a team of hybrid college advisors based in Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, and Texas. Each college advisor reporting to the Supervisor will remotely advise high school students through the college process at 6-8 schools. As a leader, the Supervisor will work with the rootEd Alliance and STARS member schools to create a comprehensive plan for advisor assignments, responsibilities, and expectations. The Supervisor will also evaluate advisor performance and may manage their own portfolio of schools to advise students. This position reports to the Executive Director of the STARS College Network.

Responsibilities

  • Manages a group of STARS College Advisors based around the country providing regular guidance on best practices, role expectations, and outcomes reporting.
  • Assists with hiring and onboarding of new advisors.
  • Collaborates with STARS College Network members and rootEd high school partners regarding advisor placement.
  • Regularly meets with rootEd and STARS leadership to identity opportunities for collaboration.
  • Regularly meets remotely with advisors to check on progress and performance.
  • Travels to various sites for in-person meetings with advisors.
  • Provides 1:1 college advising in a remote setting with assigned high schools.
  • Travels to assigned high schools once per quarter for in-person meetings with students.
  • Hosts virtual events with high schools to promote college-going, assist with application completion, provide essay support, and share information on applying for financial aid.
  • Responds to students, advisors, and partners via phone and e-mail.
  • Weekend and evening availability is expected throughout the year for some aspects of the position including travel to high school sites or STARS member sites.
  • Maintains relationships with all individuals involved in the recruitment process, including routinely counseling students and parents regarding the admission process.
  • Participates in special projects such as developing marketing materials, monitoring budgets and recruiting underrepresented groups with moderate/high levels of authority.

Education:
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Working Conditions
  • Work will take place remotely and in an office setting.
  • Candidates should live in the Chicagoland area or be able to relocate to start the position. Regular presence in the office on the University of Chicago campus in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago for meetings and events is required.
