Training & Professional Development Specialist

Lead efforts to provide campus-wide training and professional development for Academic Advisors, positioning advisors to understand and promote student development, progress and success. Reporting to the Director of University Advising and the Explore Center, the Training and Professional Development Specialist will coordinate and design training and professional development programs through close collaborating with leaders in the advising and student service communities, recognizing programs may serve both advisors and related student service professionals. Will be responsible for the ongoing assessment of training/professional development efforts. Serves as an active member of leadership committees in the academic advising community.

As a liaison with the Office of the University Registrar (OUR) the Training and Professional Development Specialist will assist in managing and developing processes/initiatives which support and are heavily utilized by the advising community. Collaborate with OUR in providing training on advising related systems. Provide feedback to OUR and advising community on content for student facing materials related to advising and advising systems. Assist in developing and maintaining documentation regarding advising processes, systems and resources.

Training will leverage and promote the centrally coordinated and de-centrally delivered model of academic advising at the University and audiences will include both new and experienced staff, and may include other advising related campus partners, such as career coaches/advisors and program coordinators. All effort should be made to align training and professional development activities with best practice standards and competencies as articulated by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), the Council for the Advancement of Standards (CAS) in Higher Education and other professional organizations as appropriate. As identified by NACADA Core Competencies, UNL seeks to incorporate Relational, Conceptual and Informational components of advising in training and professional development. The Training & Professional Development Specialist may assist in the provision of 1:1 advising/coaching services during high traffic times.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Master's degree plus four years of related experience in higher education required. Experience in advising/career coaching related areas, such as student affairs will be highly considered. Evident of 1:1 student interaction/advising necessary. Must have demonstrated organizational, time management, writing, and public speaking skills. Experience must demonstrate an ability to learn extensive requirements, policies and procedures, and use of various student information systems and platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience providing developmental training to professionals preferred. Ability to evaluate programs and initiatives helpful. Demonstrated experience successfully collaborating across departments desirable. Prefer instructional design and technology proficiency.
