Department Information

The mission of Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) is to provide high quality, humane care for research and teaching animals at Indiana University Bloomington, and ensure compliance with federal laws and guidelines and campus policies related to animal use.

LAR is responsible for managing the campus core animal facilities and providing medical care and oversight for all campus facilities in which animals are maintained for research and teaching.

Job Summary

This position's primary role is to assist with providing training and technical support to researchers on Bloomington campus. This position will assist with health surveillance of the colonies on campus, providing animal health care, maintaining programs for sanitation validation, and other projects as assigned.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Provides training to laboratory staff on proper handling, dosing, sample collection techniques, aseptic technique, and surgical techniques.
  • Provides technical service support to investigators.
  • Provides animal health care to animals used in research and teaching by performing clinical rounds, communicating with labs, and maintaining animal health records.
  • Assisting with health surveillance by collecting and processing samples.
  • Maintains programs for sanitation validation.
General Responsibilities
  • Leads research activities and protocol development.
  • Maintains equipment, including preventive maintenance, scheduling repairs as needed, service agreement negotiations, trouble shooting equipment malfunctions, and maintaining an active list of vendors to respond to equipment loss.
  • Supervises, mentors, and provides training for junior-level staff.
  • Prepares summary data reports, and creates and maintains databases for storage and analysis.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable local and federal regulations.
  • May design and conduct a wide range of complex experiments.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in a science related field.
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in veterinary technology or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 3 years of laboratory research experience
Preferred
  • 1 year animal care experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Preferred
  • ALAT Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician Experience

Working Conditions / Demands

The role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
